Both me and my ex girlfriend (I do have social skills, shocking, I know) both like sherlock holmes, and the modern adaption, but the thing is, we like different ones, she likes the british 'Sherlock' whereas I like the american 'Elementary'. We have often debated which one is better. It tends to come down to attracting a larger audience versus entertaining the one you already have. Scott Cooper's slow burn character study of infamous Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger is a showcase for a truly transformative performance by Johnny Depp, and while slow moving, is still an effective and engrossing portrait of Bulger.
Tomas Alfredson's intensely cerebral cinematic adaptation of John le Carré's equally cerebral and complex film is a worthwhile exercise in subdued character studies. It might not be the most intense or gripping of espionage films, but it makes up for it by having top notch acting, and wonderfully atmospheric direction.
